Paint Swatches in Gouache + Watercolor

“The morning cup of coffee
has an exhilaration about it
which the cheering influence
of the afternoon or evening cup of tea
cannot be expected to reproduce.”
Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.

I paint my swatches with thicker at the top and thinner underneath so that I can see the variation.

Gouache and watercolor are perfect buddies.

Gouache is more opaque.

Watercolor more transparent.

But some gouache is somewhat transparent.

And some watercolor is somewhat opaque.

Little squares of watercolor paper come in quite handy. I cut a few pages worth of 1.5" x 1.5" squares. I paint "sample" color swatches for reference and paint little squares of color patterns that just make me happy.

Paint yourself sunny days full of vivid color.

What is making you happy these days?
