Mindful Meditative Mandala Madness
yay. mandala WeEK.
Ⓜ️andalas & geometric patterns 🙃 are our themes for Week 5️⃣ of the Index-Card-a-Day Challenge
where our goal is to make 61 cards in 61 days, at the pace of ONE per DAY! I've done 4 Instagram Lives this week where we did mandala draw-alongs, and I hope you caught one of them! Be sure to follow me at @gypsy999 to catch future arty fun.
I'm kind of gaga over mandalas and have been drawing them for over a decade!
They are a nice mash-up of drawing and doodling and maybe some far-fetched version of geometry? Each mandala artist approaches the mandala creation process differently. Some start with a center circle, others with a square or pinwheel. Some artists create detailed compass measured works of geometric art. So there are different styles and types of mandalas. I do find them meditative but not in a woo woo precious sort of way, more in a relaxing-get-your-mind-off-problems-sort-of-way.
My mandala work is free-form without a plan; I like the problem-solving aspect... and not knowing what on earth will happen. Usually [but not always] I'll start with a circle. I do not use a ruler or compass or OUIJA Board to guide the way, folks, just a pen with a consistent ink flow! Each layer stems simply from the last. My approach and go-to designs have evolved and shifted over the years and I love that. Some motifs continue to show up; some have morphed into other things.
I taught several workshops for middle/high schoolers at my daughters' schools in the hopes of sparking or fueling a love of drawing! In teaching mandala art, I include some projects that are collaborative so that the entire class can contribute to a design!
I invite you to play along with the theme by incorporating a mandala in your daily card or doing an extra "bonus" card!
Here are the official ICADs plus the extra bonus ICADs created so far this week! And it's only Tuesday! I have drawn more but haven't had a chance to photograph so I'll catch up with those in the next post. As always, thank you for reading along my friends!
