Linear Textures in Lime
Thu, March 26, 2009 at 05:00AM fluid acrylics + fiber paste + comb = raised linear texture

Discovering new ways to add texture to acrylic backgrounds. This abstract coppery lime background was painted on 9 x 12" watercolor paper. The raised texture was created on a layer of Golden fiber paste applied with a plastic gift card. Fiber paste forms a raised texture that can be shaped or painted ~ feels rough like sandpaper and holds texture. Next, I painted Golden fluid acrylic paint on top of the fiber paste with a plastic gift card. Next, I textured the paint with a comb to create the look of a grid. Playing around with layers of fiber paste and paint, creating grooves and texture, so fun!
Other journal pages created with fiber paste include Elemental Grid, a Journal Lettering Experiment, and the first background in Art & Visual Journaling. Another example at Flickr and a finished background at Altered Catalog: Adjectives.
The first experiment was described at Linear Textures in Red ~ followed the same process without fiber paste. Did you know? Art supply manufacturer sites often have detailed product information and examples. Lots of knowledge at the Golden website.

I love textures, this seems really fun to use, I must buy some!!
I'm trying to find a good pen that writes over dark painted backgrounds, but its hard finding a good pen that doesnt get clogged up easily and writes clearly over the backgrounds. At the moment I'm just using a white paint marker, but its such a wide tip, its hard to make it look good without being really chunky letters. I here Sakura pens are good but there are so many different kinds I have no idea where to start, any ideas?

Missi, Great question! I did some experimentation & research in Journal Lettering: Part 1 and Part 2. After lots of trial and error, I use a white Sakura glaze pen. I've only been able to find them in a "pack" of Sakura glaze pens not separately. For thicker lines, a white or light colored Sharpie poster paint pen. One note... writing on fiber paste or fluid acrylics that contain micro-metals would likely ruin almost any pen! Best wishes! ~ Tammy
