Creative Experiments #10: March

"Art is unquestionably one of the purest
and highest elements in human happiness.
It trains the mind through the eye,
and the eye through the mind.
As the sun colors flowers,
so does art color life."
~John Lubbock

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the February challenge. If you added more creativity to your life in February, celebrate your success!!!

The March challenge begins today. Here's how it works!

  1. Each month, I will post a list of 12 Creative Experiments to consider
  2. Decide how many Experiments you want to do, this is your personal goal
  3. Work toward your personal goal
  4. During the month, post your progress in the comments of this post
  5. Go grab an ART=HAPPY badge and spread the word

The March Experiments
Daisy Yellow

For tracking purposes, each experiment is valued at one creativity point unless otherwise noted.

♥ Create art focused on a square (the concept of a square, something square, the shape)
♥ Skim 2 non-fiction books and jot down ideas
♥ Finish an unfinished art journal page
♥ Write a page of thoughts on 2 days
♥ Use colors you don't typically use in an art or craft
♥ Explore a new-to-you aisle at an art supply store or a non-fiction aisle at a book store
♥ Listen to a creative podcast (I like The Creative Mom Podcast, CraftyPodCraftSanity)
♥ Send a handwritten note to thank someone for doing something
♥ Use familiar art/creative materials in a new way ~ play with your supplies! If you embroider, try embroidering on your art journal page.
♥ Sketch, write, play a musical instrument in a public place
♥ In line at the grocery store, take note of a person in line; write a character description for this person.
♥ Draw a rough map of a place in your life - a favorite vacation spot, your house, school, the grocery store (ideas @ Hand Drawn Map Association and links + maps the kids drew at Making Maps and More Maps)

[As a reminder, please do not copy/paste the experiments to your site, as excited as you are to do them, as they are copyright Daisy Yellow. Please link back to the list if you wish and of course post your experiments to share!]

Notes from the crowd...

Check out all of the creative experiments for ideas & inspiration.

Tammy, you've inspired me to try my hand at Zentangles! Just published my first on my blog - thank you for your creative prompts and inspiration! Hugs, Terri xoxo

Hi Tammy; I am going to see if I can get the Challenge for March accomplished this month. Thanks for all the inspiration you give all of us. You are amazing, except I haven't figured out yet when you have time to sleep.

Good list of things to get me thinking more creatively. I like the one about the person ahead of you in line, to write a character description. I could never think of anything interesting if I wasn't looking at someone, you know, if I had to take it out of thin air. This will be fun to try.

I haven't participated in February but this month I will. I like the ideas listed. I think I'll go for 7 of them, maybe more!

Thanks for the mention, Tammy!

and I too love this list, especially about the character description. It also seems to dovetail well with Leah's CED theme for March - stories.

And exploring a new-to-you aisle at a craft or book store - that would never occur to me on my own. Great prompts!

I posted about this on my bog. I'm looking forward to the challenge and am already reconsidering some of the things I said "I can't really do this" to :)

I just discovered blog. I think it's AWESOME. You have so much information. Your blog is also so colorful, fun, and inviting. I've been trying to add creativity into my life. I'm going to join your March Challenge.

* Terri, My doodles and patterns aren't zentangles (I think that's a brand name of a set of patterns and process for doodling) but I think folks are using the word zentangle and doodle interchangeably.

* Martha, indeed there was a month earlier this year when I wasn't sleeping due to coughing and I drew a LOT of doodles during that period.

*Sophie (MissKoolAid), Yay, glad you are back and working on your experiments for March.

*Sophie_vf, I am thrilled that you are finding the experiments intriguing, and I look forward to your experiences in the world of character development and aisle-perusing.

*Chel, It's interesting that we automatically say these negative things to ourselves and it's important to notice them as you did. Good luck!

*Daisy, I'm so happy to have a reader named Daisy! Good luck with the experiments.

*immortalindigo, I look forward to hearing about your experiments this month and to the doodles you create when you develop your unique style.

I have only recently made a page in 'pink'...a colour I would never use for anything before - cut a seashell shape in bright pink paper, then pressed tissue paper into a shell, then drew a shell in oil pastel pink. Great fun!
