The page is yours. The journal is yours. It does not matter what color you use, what you put on the page. The idea is to enjoy yourself, spark creativity, think new thoughts, relax. Try mixing colors you love with new-to-you colors. Or limit the palette to colors you don't typically use. What could you discover? What new ideas might come to mind? This is a series of posts on getting out of your safe zone and trying new colors in your art. Pink is the focus today.
How to expand your color palette...
<Do a mind map> Explore pink, from the palest to the most vivid magenta; what thoughts come to mind? There's a color mind map in Color Series: Inspired by Blue. Random thoughts on pink include, "bubble gum, happy, peach."
<Photograph Ideas> Photograph the pinks you find in your world, ~ flowers, fabrics, soaps, toys, sunsets. Tag your photos in photo editing software or Flickr and review for inspiration. Here are some of the pinks I have in my collection. A mosaic on a cow sculpture in Texas, banners from the ceiling and donation plaques at the Pittsburgh Children's Museum, coneflowers.
<Find ideas at Flickr> Peruse the Pink Exteriors or Best of Pink groups. Or go to an art journal group like Art Journal and search on "pink" or any search term to see all photos in that group tagged or described with that phrase.
<Explore your art supplies> My daughter and I stamped ATCs with acrylics and leaves.
<Find ideas in fabric> Ornate Medallions Batik fabric by Hoffman, Flirt fabric by Free Spirit

Today it's magenta, bubble gum, peach, rose. In art, I often reach for vivid colors like magenta and lime. What are your colors? Could you jump out of the box and use a new hue, a new shade, a new combination? What about pink?
