Resources I found helpful in my camera purchase research:
- Book: The Complete Guide to Digital Photography
by Michael Freeman
- Digital SLR Guide by Chris Roberts was helpful in narrowing down my needs for digital SLR cameras and lenses based on my photography style(s). His article How to choose the best digital SLR lens helped me better understand lenses (now I know 2% of what there is to know). He also has cameral reviews and a conversational style that speaks to the enthusiastic beginner.
- Photography sites: Steve's Digicams for detailed camera reviews and photos of each camera back 10 years; great for researching an older digital camera you have been gifted or are considering for purchase
- Photoblogs: Shutter Sisters, [daily dose of imagery], J.R. Photoblog
- Gorgeous photography: The Darling Life, Shootspaces
- Creative blogs with fabulous photography: Simply Blogged, Curious Girl, A Day Just Like Dessert, Soule Mama
- Flickr pix {lovely photostreams}: Zebrafink74, {Dan}, Corfu~ bridgepix
- Flickr Camera Finder: For most photos, you can see what type of camera was used. Flickr Camera Finder provides trending of the top cameras used. You can click on a specific model (but not a specific lens) and see photos taken with that camera!
So it came down to the Nikon D90 and the Canon 50D. The winner was selected after exhaustive link hopping and testing, price analysis, blah blah blah ad infinitim. I finally bought the D90 with an extra lens from Amazon because my old Nikon AF lenses can be used with the Nikon body.
Curious...
- What camera do you use, and what is your go-to lens? Nikon D90/unsure which lens
- What camera(s) do you take on vacation? Nikon D90, Sony W70
- What camera do you carry in your purse or backpack? Sony W70

You made a great choice. I've been salivating over the D90 since the news of it broke. The commercials were so good. Whoever did their ad campaign should have gotten a raise. If I had the money, I'd be buying the D90 in a heartbeat.
Thanks, Monique! I wasn't even aware of the ads, thanks to TIVO. I think it will be a camera that I grow into, so to speak.
I have the Nikon d50 since a couple of years and only the lens it came with, though I wish I could afford a coulpe of new ones to play with... :-) Happy play time with your new camera!

This was the ad that sold me. My jaw literally dropped when I first saw it:

Wow! Wonderfully photographed ad! That would do the trick. ~ Tammy
I only have two cameras now, and one probably doesn't even count to traditional photographers! I have a Nikon D60 for proper photography, and the 8MP camera on my iPhone for trips and quick photos.
