Art Journaling Ideas + Equations

Out of clutter find simplicity;
From discord find harmony;
In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity."
~ Albert Einstein

Like Dorothy arriving in Munchkinland, art journal pages come to life as you build them. One of the fun things about art journaling is that you can build a page in any order... and combine lots of different media. Like paint-images-words, words-images-color... and you can layer... images-gesso-texture-paint-words-images-color-words.
No magic formulas, templates, instruction manuals, food scales, guidelines, equations, spells, roman numerals, restraints or ancient teachings required.
This 9x12" art journal collage on watercolor paper is from late 2007; one of my first art journal pages! It's chaotic, but it was developed by layers upon layers of leftover scrapbook cardstock.
I just finished reading Sabrina Ward Harrison's book Spilling Open: The Art of Becoming Yourself. Such fun to page through, from the perspective of an art journalist. I love the way Sabrina mixes thoughts, lists, paint, mini-photos & sketches so freely in her pages. The book is a collection of her art journal pages, filled with the thoughts of a young woman. View several images from her books, including Spilling Open and Messy Thrilling Life, at her website.
To get a feel for the infinite creativity within the page, check out the book 1,000 Artist Journal Pages (by Dawn DeVries Sokol), an entrancing collection of art journal pages from artists like you from around the world.
