Altered Catalog: Boxes
Sat, November 1, 2008 at 06:00AM Finding a hardback that's cheap and strong with unique features is enough to make my day. Especially unique aspects - fonts, illustrations, format, irrebular size, variety, text, paper type, fold-out pages, pockets, windows etc. Each feature expands your possibilities...

The left side of this catalog is the front cover of the book, and the right side actually folds under to make the first left-hand page. So my thought was to use the right side to make some sort of list and the left side a grid of textured boxes. The pages wouldn't be seen together although they are attached. And that's good because I don't really like them next to each other!
First the pages were prepped with a few layers of gesso. Then I added the magenta lines of the grid with a ruler dipped in Golden fluid acrylic paint. Cut random images with either pattern or texture and glued into the grid with Mod Podge. Edged the images with Neocolor II wax crayons and rubbed for depth. To get the effect of muted lines on the right side, added lines with a plastic gift card and before the lines were dry, painted over with white gesso. It is actually a bit more blue but the scanner wanted purple so who was I to argue?
