    Abstract Art: Imagery and Doodling

    "Art has to be incredibly layered.
    Symbols, signifiers...
    layers that relate.
    Combine signifiers
    with more abstract notions.
    Push! Vary lines."
    ~ Kay WalkingStick

    Doodles and imagery in art create magical beauty.

    Add new dimension to your art journal backgrounds by exploring art with symbolic imagery, doodles, scribbles, detailed patterns & mandalas. Sentimental (above) is a diary drawing in watercolour pencil, ink & acrylic on paper by Australian artist Sarah Zambiasi. The imagery in Sarah's artwork provide intriguing layers of meaning. {Artwork shared with permission from the artist.}

    Think through your own personal imagery... scribbles, symbols, hand-lettered fonts, patterns and images that are important to you (even if it's not clear why). Look at the art in your home, the patterns in your linens & furniture, your jewelry. For me, doodles and imagery add playful, abstract detail to my art journal pages, and they are great for practicing line control.

    "Bird in Hand" is one of my favorite pieces by artist Kelly King. The magical doodle patterns give such a warm and whimsical feel to the art. It just makes me smile. {Artwork shared with permission from the artist.}
